The cumulative number of earthquakes since 2000 in a 9-mile (15-kilometer) radius and 19-mile (30-kilometer) high cylinder centered on the recent earthquake hypocenters exhibits a dramatic increase at the time of the Tohoku shock. This is roughly the volume of crust that ruptured in each earthquake.
