A widely-felt magnitude-4.8 earthquake ruptured at the southern edge of Santiago today.

The event likely struck on the megathrust that lies 90 km beneath Santiago.

A M 8.8 quake struck on the megathrust to the south in 2010, and a M 8.3 struck to the north in 2015.
