Today’s M 4.2 quake likely struck on a ‘tear fault’ that connects portions of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake rupture. Today’s event is strike-slip, whereas the 1971 event was largely thrust. Is this a 50-year-old aftershock or an independent event? Probably the former.
