Map of site amplification in L.A. Basin vs contours of depth to basement

At sites throughout the L.A. Basin, seismometers recorded shaking during the Ridgecrest earthquake. The greatest shaking amplification (red diamonds) in long-period waves (six seconds in this example) did not occur in the deepest parts of the basin — the darkest brown colors in this map — as researchers had expected.
