The Japanese Seismic Hazard Information System (J-SHIS) model is surprisingly poorly correlated with the large damaging earthquakes that have struck Japan since 1990. Relative to the modeled shaking hazard, there have been too many quakes along the Japan Trench, along the Japan Sea coast, and on the southern main island of Kyushu, and too few along the Nankai Trench.
