M 5.6 quake and 5.0 aftershock strike New Zealand

Two large earthquakes struck offshore New Zealand over the weekend. The region hosts a number of large faults capable of generating major quakes. The South Island is transected by the Alpine fault, a right-lateral strike-slip fault that represents a major plate boundary.
