(Left) Father James B. Macelwane, S.J. (1883–1956) organized the Jesuit Seismological Service, whose central station is at Saint Louis University. The Macelwane Medal is awarded annually by the American Geophysical Union to its most accomplished young scientists. We owe the lone US recording the 1911 earthquake to Father Macelwane.
