Right-lateral surface displacement surrounding the San Andreas Fault between 2007 and 2018 measured from airborne lidar. The red colors indicate motion towards the northwest, and blue shows motion towards the southeast. In the plot on the left, the sharp change in red to blue across the fault indicates that the tectonic motion is localized to a narrow fault. On the right, collected 37 miles (60 kilometers) to southeast, there is zone of low displacement colored in white along the fault bend, indicating that the motion is distributed beyond the fault trace.
