Earthquakes are not uncommon in the East African Rift Zone, often originating, as in the case of today’s M6.0 offshore Tanzania, on a secondary branch of the rift. Shaking intensity in this earthquake is consistent with Temblor’s global PUSH model, suggesting it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Based on the modeled amount of shaking, we expect some damage to Dar es Salaam and coastal towns to the south.
