Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program

CERT programs educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area, and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. The Hillsborough CERT Program is a dynamic community of volunteers who want to help themselves, their family and their neighbors in a disaster.

As a Hillsborough CERT graduate, Hillsborough Neighborhood Network (HNN) is the place to go to be connected with your Neighborhood Leads and with other CERT graduates near you. Hillsborough CERTs work with their Neighborhood Leads before a disaster to help ensure their neighborhood is prepared for emergencies. This can include small projects such as identifying residents with special needs who may need assistance in an emergency, helping test emergency communications in your neighborhood, or establishing a neighborhood meeting place. Additionally, over half of the HNN Neighborhood Leads chose to complete their CERT training.
